Question by Sally: NEED HELP! How do I get my sister into Rehab??? 5150?
My sister is a meth addict and is literally deterioating by the second. I need help because I am afraid Im going to loose my little sister. Shes 26 years old and has been doing Meth everyday. She thinks theres nothing wrong with her. Shes skin and bone. My family is literally in pain over this because its like our hands are bound and we cant do anything. She is now talking to herself…threatening all of this that we’re plotting against her or that the government is hiding cameras all around the city looking for her…shes talking crazy and she says she hears voices thats making her do things. She has a son that she will literally take with her on her “joy rides”. We’ve got the Father involved to keep her son away from her and terminate custody until she gets help. She still wont. How in California can I save my sister??? She wont voluntarily help herself. I’m not trying to bury my sister…I’ve tried calling courts, rehab centers…no one can give me a straight answer…I’ve heard of the Marchman Act…but is that available in Los Angeles County??? Please someone help or guide me in the right direction…this DRUG is literally killing my sister.

I would try calling AL-ANON. They should surely be able to give you some advice. Just Google ” AL-ANON Los Angeles” and you’ll find 3 different phone numbers for LA.
Everything I read about the Marchman Act suggests that it applies only to Florida. Sorry.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. How terrific that you’re wanting to make a difference though. A drug and alcohol counselor (or “addictions specialist” or “substance abuse counselor”) needs to get certified and have gotten a lot of clinical fieldwork experience with an actual patient caseload under supervision. A lot of jobs prefer those with a master’s degree. Some community colleges offer an associate (two-year) degree program in addictions counseling and that may help one to realize if he or she would like to continue in the field with training. There may be a bachelor’s degree in substance abuse counseling, too.
For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search ‘counselors’ or such.
This site has more specific information about addictions counseling: http://www.naadac.org and can click “education” and then “certification” or such.

With schooling, please avoid those private overly priced For-profit schools such as strayer, ashworth, devry, ITT tech, capella, argosy, keiser, aiu, walden, university of phoenix, colorado tech, kaplan, ashford, sanford brown, anthem, pima institute, brown mackie and others as they are merely out to “make a profit” (** and their course credits may NOT transfer to other schools).
These consumer sites have negative posts by former students about those private $ $ for-profit schools, and please heed the students’ warnings:

Question by oblivious: how did elliot smith die?

Answer by iijakii
Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003 in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California at age 34, from two stab wounds to the chest during an emotional fight with Jennifer Chiba. [16] According to her account, the two were arguing when she locked herself in the bathroom. Chiba heard him scream, and upon opening the door, saw Smith standing there with a steak knife in his chest. She pulled the knife out of him, after which Smith collapsed and she called 911. The time of death was listed at 12:18 PM. While originally reported as a suicide, the official autopsy report released in late December 2003 left the question of possible homicide open:
While his history of depression is compatible with suicide, and the location and direction of the stab wound is consistent with self-infliction, several aspects of the circumstances (as are known at this time) are atypical of suicide and raise the possibility of homicide. These include the absence of hesitation wounds, stabbing through clothing, and the presence of small incised wounds on the right arm and left hand (possible defensive wounds). Additionally, the girlfriend’s [Jennifer Chiba’s] reported removal of the knife and subsequent refusal to speak with detectives are all of concern.
According to the coroner’s report, the alleged suicide note, written on a Post-it, read, I’m so sorry – love, Elliot. God forgive me. The misspelling of “Elliott” was later acknowledged as a mistake on the part of the coroner. Robin Peringer, one of the singers few close friends towards the end of his life, says that Smith was a “cutter”, which would help explain the “possible defensive wounds.” Fritz Michaud, an engineer during the Basement sessions, claimed that “Elliott literally wouldn’t have been caught dead without his shirt on,” possibly explaining why the stab wounds penetrated his shirt (something extremely uncommonly seen in stabbing suicides).
His death has not been officially declared a suicide, and the investigation into his death continues, although almost no new information at all has publicly come to light since 2003.
