Louisiana is famous for its spicy Cajun food and popular tourist attractions. However, no state is exempt from drug use. In measuring Louisiana’s drug use rates (as charted above), the 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) survey has Louisiana ranked among the 10 states with the lowest rates. Similarly, the rates for prior year alcohol dependence or abuse have been steadily at or below the national rates for all ages. However, the rates of prior year illegal drug abuse have been more changeable for individuals age 26 and older, ranking Louisiana among the highest in the country.

The 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) survey cites that Louisiana had a total of 145 treatment facilities; 53 were private nonprofit; 38 were private for-profit, and 2 facilities were owned and ran by a tribal organization. Notably, in 2002 Louisiana had a total of 167 treatment facilities; in 2006, this number declined to 145. This decrease is mainly derived from the loss of 11 private nonprofit centers and 12 facilities that the federal, state, or local government owned or operated.

In 2006, 104 facilities offered outpatient treatment, an additional 47 centers offered residential care, and 10 facilities offered opiate treatment for vicodin addiction and other opiate addictions. A 2006 NSSATS survey shows that Louisiana had a one-day treatment admissions total of 9,280 clients, with 7,667 being in outpatient treatment; 601 clients were below 18 years of age.

During the last 15 years there has been a minute decrease in the number of treatment admissions for alcohol and an elevation in the number of admissions for opiates besides heroin and methamphetamine. Where alcohol-only admissions have decreased from 20 percent in 1992 to 12 percent in 2006, drug-only admissions skyrocketed from 22 percent in 1992 to 44 percent in 2006.

It is crucial that those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction seek help and make use of the resources provided to them. In Louisiana, the rates for individuals age 26 and older requiring drug-only treatment and not receiving it has steadily been among the 10 highest in the country. Similarly, the rates for those needing alcohol treatment and not receiving it have been greater than the national rates.

For individuals suffering from prior year serious psychological distress (SPD) age 18 and older and 26 and older, Louisiana’s statistics have been above the national rates. However, the rates for individuals age 18 to 25 were among the lowest in the country while the rates for prior year major depressive episodes (MDE) have stayed close to the national rates.

By taking advantage of the many resources offered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), individuals can receive drug and alcohol treatment from a publicly or privately funded organization.
