To determine each state’s rate of drug abuse and alcohol dependency, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health’s combined their 2002-2003 and 2005-2006 surveys. The final reporting cites that Indiana’s rates on alcohol and illegal drug use have stayed at or below the national rates. The only exception are the rates for nonmedical use of pain relievers, which have constantly been above the national rates for individuals age 12 to 17.

Painkiller prescription drugs, such as vicodin, are often abused. When consumed for a lengthy period of time, an addiction can occur. Common signs of abuse include “doctor shopping” (seeing a host of physicians to obtain the drug for nonmedical reasons), secluded behavior, lying, stealing, and mood swings.

To assist in the fight against vicodin addiction and a host of other substance abuse, a number of treatment facilities are available in Indiana. The 2006 NSSATS survey reports that 227 of 338 treatment facilities were private nonprofit; 94 facilities private for-profit; and the rest were owned or ran by federal, state, or local governments.

In 2002, there were 288 treatment facilities in Indiana; by 2006, that figure had risen to 338. This is due to an additional 34 private nonprofit centers and 21 private for-profit facilities. 313 facilities offered outpatient care, and an additional 48 included residential care in their services. Furthermore, 15 centers offered an opioid treatment program, which is particularly helpful in treating vicodin addiction. The chart below shows the number and percentage of treatment admissions in Indiana for 2004-2006.

Indiana’s rates for individuals who needed help for substance abuse but did not receive it in the year prior have stayed at or below the national rates, with the exception of individuals age 18 to 25; in this case the rates were above the national rates.

However, the rates for individuals with related psychological issues have varied in Indiana. In 2005-2006, individuals age 12-17 were among the 10 lowest in the country while the rates for individuals 26 and older were among the 10 highest.

To diminish Indiana’s rate of drug abuse and alcohol dependency, affected individuals should consider the national, state, and personal benefits to be gained from getting and staying clean.
