Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues At-A-Glance
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
Based on the chart depicted above, South Dakota has been ranked among the states with the lowest rate for drug dependence or drug abuse; however, the rates for alcohol dependence or abuse have steadily been among the highest. These results are based on the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) 2006 survey.
It is obvious that there is a major problem with the use of drugs in South Dakota; as a result, the government and private organizations have established a number of treatment facilities. As of 2006, there were 59 treatment facilities in South Dakota; 34 were private nonprofit; 10 were private for-profit; and 6 were owned or operated by a tribal government. These facilities offer an array of treatment services. In 2006, 48 South Dakota facilities offered outpatient treatment (including drug detox programs); 24 offered residential treatment; and 2 physicians and 1 treatment program were authorized to offer buprenorphine treatment for opiate addiction.
The federal, state, and local government made monetary contributions to 41 facilities, while 28 facilities had agreements with managed care organizations. A 2006 NSSATS survey states that South Dakota had a one-day total of 2,314 clients being treated, with 1,751 receiving outpatient care; 348 to the complete client total were below 18 years old. Additionally, during the last 15 years, South Dakota has shown a consistent increase in the number of treatment admissions for marijuana and meth addiction. Where alcohol-only admissions decreased from 63 percent in 1992 to 45 percent in 2006, drug-only admissions increased from 2 percent in 1998 to 10 percent in 2005; treatment admissions for illegal drugs and alcohol increased from 28 percent to 41 percent.
With regards to individuals requiring drug-only treatment but not receiving it in the prior year, South Dakota has steadily ranked among the states with the lowest rates. However, for individuals requiring alcohol-only treatment and not receiving it in the past year, South Dakota has ranked among the states with the highest rates. The obvious paradox is, although South Dakota has a low rate of alcohol use, many of those who are dependent on it, have not sought alcohol treatment. Contrarily, despite the high rate of drug dependency in South Dakota, there are many who have sought treatment for their issue.
There is also a stark difference in the amount of individuals who are dependent on drugs and those who are dependent on alcohol in South Dakota, with the latter being significantly lower. Those needing treatment for alcohol dependency should enter a treatment facility, and more individuals should refrain from abusing drugs.
