Question by Alicia: does the sinclair method really work and is it a cure?
I’ve been having problems with AA and other programs. I detox for a while and usually before a year is out I’ve lost control and fallen off the wagon.

Someone suggested the Sinclair Method and I was wondering if it really works.

Is it a cure? Not really as you’re always going to be an alcoholic. Is it damn close to being a cure? Yes it is.

One of the problems with detox, rehab, and AA is that oddly enough, going cold turkey on alcohol can often trigger a stronger desire for it than by detoxing by cutting back.

That’s what few people tell you. That you don’t have to go cold, you can detox by slow withdrawal.

Also there is the problem of being a recovering alcoholic. You are an outcast in many ways. As Robin Williams once put it…”I’m a reformed alcoholic. I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT MYSELF! No, you have that double vodka, I’ll be in the corner kicking the cat.”

A funny way of saying that you are always going to be tempted when others drink around you. Either that or you’re going to be excluded from certain events because frankly no one wants to be the one that tips you off the wagon.

So how does it work? When an alcoholic drinks, the body produces endorphins which is part of the body’s reward system. This is why people enjoy working out, certain foods, taking risks (roller coaster junkies, extreme sports folks, etc), sex, getting scared at movies, etc. The release of endorphins is the reward that teaches the body to crave more.

So when you drink, you release endorphins which makes the body crave more and this is why we go from cold turkey to drinking anything alcoholic we can get our grubby protuberances on.

What the medication does (Naltrexone is the most commonly used with studies being done on Naloxone and Nalmefene) is to block the release of the endorphins. So you take the pill one hour before you’re going to drink and your body’s reward system blocks the endorphin reward meaning that your body doesn’t get the craving for more.

Yes, this treatment means that you can go out and drink that glass of bubbly at New Years Eve, can drink a toast to the Bride and Groom, go on that Wine tasting in Napa Valley, knock off a pint or two while watching the game at the local sports bar.

Which makes you feel normal again.

There is a problem if you go on it. While it’ll work right off the bat, there is the psychological aspect. You have been an addict for so long that while this works, you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. That you’re waiting for the moment of failure to come. It doesn’t, but for a good while you’re going to have to overcome that aspect of you.

Now I say that this is not a cure as you’re always going to have to take the pill before drinking. I’ve been on for almost three years now and still have to take that pill. But while it is not the cure…it’s the next best thing.

Question by Ashley W: Eating disorder help?
I am 17 and bulimic. I need to find either free/inexpensive eating disorder help in Central New York. as of now our family is in the midst of getting insurance which makes it tough. any help is appreciated.

i used to be bulimic as well, i was younger though when i started i was 14 :/ and i was BAD! like 4 times a DAY bad, i can tell you first hand, quiting is the hardest thing to do, but once your there, you never even think twice about keeping food down, if you want help first YOU must commit to it, theres no better or cheaper help, its hard cold turkey but try YOU have to want it for yourself,
i personally gained wieght at first, but now its been a year and ive never been healthier or skinnier in my entire life, its all about portion control and shrinking your stomach, since binging stretches it.

but hey if i can do it you can too 🙂

Even for regular families with addicts, drug centers can be ugly places. Parents commit unruly adolescents or even their adult children against their will for months at a time. Beatings are often part of therapy, hygiene can be poor and lax enforcement of regulations prevails.

No one knows how many drug rehabilitation clinics and treatment centers there are. The Mexican government is expanding a series of Nueva Vida rehab centers for teenagers, erected since 2007 with $ 205 million confiscated from a Shanghai -born drug trafficker.

However, it largely leaves the work of treating hardened addicts to nonprofit associations, some run by former addicts with little training. Many treatment centers are semi-clandestine, hidden behind walls with no signs.

A significant number of centers never register with the government. The former addicts who run them ask few questions of those who arrive for treatment, seeking nominal payment from family members.

Demand is high due to soaring drug use. A U.N. report last year estimated that 1.7 million Mexicans use cocaine, consuming 27.6 tons a year, nearly double the amount in 2002. Mexicans consume 3.9 tons of heroin a year, it added. Some 3 million Mexicans smoke marijuana, also a significant rise from earlier in the decade.

Officials put the number of drug addicts in the nation at 428,000.

President Felipe Calderon said drug cartels focused on Mexico as a market after per capita income tripled since 1993 to more than $ 10,000 last year nationwide and as much as $ 18,000 in Monterrey , a prosperous industrial hub near the border with Texas .

“This new purchasing power in the society has made the criminals modify their plans, turning from low-profile exporters to the United States to distributing and placing drugs in the big and small cities of this country,” Calderon said in a speech June 26 .

Zamudio estimated that more than half of those in drug treatment centers are there against their will, sent by family members with the help of police.

At most centers, hardened addicts are made to go cold turkey.

“There are multiple accounts of abuses occurring in drug abuse treatment centers, suggesting an urgent need for more regulation by the government and a more rigorous certification for the centers that operate. Using fear and the threat of physical abuse is no way to treat an addiction,” said Maureen Meyer , associate for Mexico and Central America at the Washington Office on Latin America , a human rights advocacy group.

Question by bobby joe: advice to find alternative to oxy?
Everyday is the same thing. Get money, get oxycodone. I care about nothing else in the world right now. It would be easy to say just stop but the problem is when i go more than a day without it I find life is just not worth living, not to mention I feel physically bad. I have no motivation to stop because I have literally nothing else in the world going for me. I know this is kind of a rant, but does anybody have any advice or anything at all? and not just, “you should go to rehab”

Note: Do NOT abuse another drug while taking oxycodone.

First, slowly wean yourself off of the drug. Steadily drop the amount you are taking until you are no longer taking it. You may not necessarily get the high you want, but if you want to get off of it then it’s either that or cold turkey.

As for alternates, I think the best alternate is to not go on another drug. I was once addicted to benzos, most notably Valium. I’ve been clean for several years and have had a more fulfilling life without it. Getting off of an addictive drug is NEVER easy, but stick with it and it will be worth it in the end.
